Virtually every recording released by the Vocal Ensemble Stuttgart is certain to become a magnate for international acclaim and international awards. It should therefore come as no surprise, that their latest recording of choral music by the extraordinary Alfred Schnittke has already generated excitement in both the choral and contemporary music communities!
While he distinguished himself in many different fields of composition, Alfred Schnittke was in fact a trained choir conductor. In the 'Psalms of Repentance', he selected texts by an anonymous 15th century Russian author. The work was premiered in Moscow in 1988 during the thousand-year anniversary of the Christianization of Russia. The texts deal with arrogance, hypocrisy, and greed. The composer mixes musical past and present, Orthodox chants, Gregorian chants, clusters and sophisticated rhythms.
Complementing the archaic power and dark mood of 'Psalms' is the minor masterpiece 'Voices of Nature' from 1972. In this uncharacteristically delicate score for 10 female voices and vibraphone, Schnittke evokes the power of nature through a wordless vocalise.
