This is the fourth volume of the “Ballet russes” series, which intends, to publish all the ballet music composed or arranged for performance by Sergej Diaghilev. A unique series featuring music from one of the most exciting creative periods of 20th century Europe.

The fact that Diaghilev would attempt to redefine the great Russian ballet tradition should come as no surprise, nor would the fact that he would select the music of Tchaikovsky for this purpose – whether in its original form or “arranged” by his virtual composer-in-residence, Igor Stravinsky. Also included on the current program is Igor Stravinsky’s “Chant du rossignol“ - an excerpt from his opera “The Nightingale“, which he arranged for Diaghilev in 1920 with scenery by Matisse and the choreography of Massine at ist premiere.
